“The Furious” Trailer Finally Arrives, Martial Arts Action Ensemble Hits Theaters May 29th!

Anticipation is always half the fun of enjoying anything, certainly the release of an upcoming summer movie, but “The Furious” takes that to a whole new level. In the two years since it was announced, entered production, and began its showcase in film festivals around the world, “The Furious” has kept martial arts fans on pins and needles with excitement and anticipation, millions eager to see its ensemble cast kicking butt in what has been positioned as a re-energizing lightning bolt to the glory days of Hong Kong action. All of that anticipation just got a whole new surge with the long-awaited debut of the trailer for “The Furious”, with the Hong Kong action ensemble set to hit theaters around the world on May 29th!

“The Furious” Trailer Is An Out Of Control Blast!

The trailer for “The Furious” hits the ground running with the urgency of its stakes and the intensity of its action with the quiet introduction to the movie’s tradesman protagonist Wang Wei (Xie Miao). After his daughter (Yang Enyou) is kidnapped by human traffickers, Wang Wei becomes a human wrecking ball on a mission to get her back, but he soon finds he’s not alone when he crosses paths with journalist Navin (Joe Taslim), also on the hunt for the same human traffickers after the disappearance of his wife (Jeeja Yanin). This leads Wang Wei and Navin to join forces on a war to rescue their loved ones.

Of course, the trailer for “The Furious” delivers a very direct and succinct download of its plot details amid its collage of the movie’s non-stop action, which already looks to be some of the wildest to come out of the Hong Kong action scene in a very long time. No less a sight that Wang Wei climbing atop a human pyramid inside of an MMA cage while battering foes left and right with a hammer is the trailer’s first declaration of “The Furious” as unmissable for action fans around the world. Such intense stunts and martial arts combat fill the screen in every second of the trailer for “The Furious”, while its collection of martial arts talent both in front of and behind the camera sells the movie as the work of some of the best in the business.

“The Furious” Assembles Martial Arts Movie Legends For Its Epic Showdown

Once known best for his portrayals of Jet Li’s on-screen son in “New Legend of Shaolin” and “My Father is a Hero”, Wushu exponent Xie Miao has steadily become a rising action star on the Chinese streaming scene in recent years with the “Fight Against Evil” franchise along with other hits like “Hunt the Wicked” and the “Eye for an Eye” movies. Joe Taslim brings similar charisma and cred to “The Furious” with his own filmography that includes “The Raid: Redemption”, “The Night Comes For Us”, and the Bruce Lee-derived series “Warrior”. Indeed, May 2026 seems poised to be a proverbial “month of Taslim”, with the release of “The Furious” on May 29th following the debut on “Mortal Kombat 2” on May 8th, Joe’s role in the franchise going from Sub-Zero to Noob Saibot in the latter.

Joey Iwanaga also brings a surprisingly vicious villain persona to “The Furious”, his weaponized incisors seen in one of the trailer’s more aggressive moments no doubt a complimentary asset to his martial arts skills seen in the finale of 2024’s “Baby Assassins 2”. Indonesia’s most reliable on-screen villain Yayan Ruhian also brings his usual deceptive deadliness to his role as the tiniest fellow on-screen who gives foes three times his size a run for their money, Yayan now adding a bow and arrow to his Silat skills alongside his and Joe Taslim’s long-awaited second on-screen brawl after “The Raid”. Martial Club’s Brian Le also barrels through the trailer like a wrecking ball (his villainous brawler said to be a show-stealer by many who saw “The Furious” on the festival circuit), and while Jeeja Yanin is only glimpsed in a photo with Joe Taslim in the trailer, the “Chocolate” star is nonetheless sure to wow audiences with her Taekwondo kicks once more.

“The Furious” also acts as a culmination of sorts in the career of fight choreographer turned director Kenji Tanigaki. A long-time collaborator with Donnie Yen, Kenji has steadily built a reputation among Hong Kong action fans for his work on  Sha Po Lang”, “Flash Point”, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In”, and countless other Hong Kong hits, along with Kenji’s stellar sword-based fight choreography on the “Rurouni Kenshin” franchise. “The Furious” marks just Kenji’s third directorial outing following 2006’s “Legend of Seven Monks” and 2021’s “Enter the Fat Dragon”, while Kensuke Sonomura serves as action director for “The Furious”. Sonomura himself has steadily grown in esteem for his work in the Japanese action movie scene, his work as fight choreographer seen and beloved by many in “Hydra”, “Bad City”, and the “Baby Assassins” franchise, along with his directorial role on 2025’s “Ghost Killer”. By any measure, “The Furious” is easily the biggest collection of martial arts talent assembled for a 2026 release, and by all accounts for its early festival screenings, it delivers on that promise and then some (and then some after that).

The Buzz For “The Furious” Is Through The Roof

Anticipation for “The Furious” already started at a 10 for action fans around the world with the movie’s announcement in 2024. Every detail for the movie’s ensemble to Kenji Tanigaki as director poised “The Furious” to be highly anticipated from the start, but the mission statement of all involved of crafting “The Furious” as a modern Hong Kong action game-changer started that excitement off even stronger, producer Bill Kong even going as far as to declare “If we fail, ‘The Furious’ will only be as good as ‘The Raid’ or ‘Taken’” in an interview with Variety, a high bar to declare from the outset, indeed.

Then, of course, “The Furious” began its wave through the festival circuit in the fall of 2025, beginning with its premiere during the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival. With its grand debut and its showing in numerous film festivals since (along several in the U.S. in the weeks leading up to its release), “The Furious” has seen virtually nothing but the most explosive and unanimously phenomenal buzz since, leading all the way to the debut of its trailer, which has truly set the internet and social media on fire. Heading into its theatrical debut, “The Furious” already seems set to be crowned just the best action movie of 2026, but is already being declared an instant generational martial arts classic. And for all the anticipation that is adding to the debut of “The Furious”, there’s still more potential in its impending release with reported discussions of “The Furious 2” already percolating. While the world will have ultimately have to wait and see what possibilities there could be for “The Furious” as a franchise after its debut, it already clearly has a huge amount of promise ahead of its release this summer to change the game for Hong Kong action and martial arts filmmaking for years to come!
