Mortal Kombat: Joe Taslim boards reboot as Sub-Zero!

Just in case you might have missed this piece of news, the long-gestating big screen reboot of “Mortal Kombat” seems to finally be gaining some momentum in its pre-production process. Following James Wan boarding the film as producer, the project has seemingly been in something of a developmental limbo, with little in the way of solid news for some time. How fitting, then, that it should finally break out of that cryogenic stasis with the character most famous for freezing people – the project’s first major bit of casting news coming in the form of Joe Taslim boarding the movie as Sub-Zero!

As covered by The Hollywood Reporter, the project is set to commence production in Australia later this year, with Simon McQuoid attached to direct and Greg Russo penning the screenplay. The film will be produced by Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster Productions, with New Line Cinema serving as distributor.

Joe Taslim is, of course, a name action fans are intimately familiar with. A former member of the Indonesian Judo Team, Taslim first gained attention for his appearance as police sergeant Jaka in 2012’s “The Raid: Redemption”, and broke out further the following year as the hard-hitting assassin Jah in “Fast and Furious 6”. Following his role in the 2016 sci-fi adventure “Star Trek Beyond”, Taslim re-teamed with his co-star from “The Raid”, Iko Uwais, for the Netflix action hit “The Night Comes For Us”, with “Headshot” co-director Timo Tjahjanto at the helm. More recently, Taslim wowed audiences on the small screen in role of the villainous Li Yong in Cinemax’s “Warrior”, based on the concept created by Bruce Lee himself.

While little information is available at present regarding what fans can expect from the project, the involvement of Taslim and Wan should leave fans assured that the “Mortal Kombat” reboot is going for a hard-R. James Wan began his directorial career in horror movies, helming the inaugural entries of the “Saw”, “Insidious”, and “Conjuring” franchises. He later proved himself equally adept as an action filmmaker, directing 2015’s “Furious 7” and last year’s superhero hit “Aquaman”, while staying close to his horror movie roots as an executive producer on the DC Universe superhero-horror streaming series “Swamp Thing”. Meanwhile, Joe Taslim’s aforementioned body of work now practically looks like a training ground for the unapologetic carnage the movie promises to be packed to the gills with.

Of course, with all of this talk of the “Mortal Kombat” reboot, one can’t help but wish to see the as yet unreleased conclusion to the preceding web-series, “Mortal Kombat: Legacy”. As Garrett Warren revealed in his exclusive interview with KFK, it’s up to “Mortal Kombat” fans around the world to knock on Warner Brothers’ door for the third season of the series to finally be released.
