Honourable Mentions
First, here are two honourable mentions that didn’t quite make the list…
Zombie Tiger – “Army of the Dead” (2021)
Yep, you read it right. A Zombie Tiger! Although the fight does not last long, the fact that we were able to see this happen on the big screen is exciting enough!
This film really went all out as if a bank heist in a zombie apocalypse didn’t sound mad enough. They threw in a zombie tiger for fun too. However, this was so well done, just not enough to make it into the list.
Gladiator Zombie Scene – “Resident Evil: Afterlife” (2010)
A classic scene from the Resident Evil series as a giant gladiator zombie is brought in against Milla Jovovich. His massive size isn’t the only problem, but there’s his giant axe too. A fun zombie fight filled with lots of slo-mo action!
OK, so now, onto THE Top 5!
5. Banging the Drum – “Rampant” (2018)
Zombies in ancient Korea? Yes, that’s right and it works so well!
Rampant is a South Korean period post-apocalyptic action horror film directed by Kim Sung-hoon. It stands out for its unique blend of historical drama and zombie horror, offering a fresh take on the popular zombie genre.
The incorporation of traditional Korean elements, including costumes, weapons, and sets, adds an authentic touch to the movie, making it an intriguing watch for fans of both historical and zombie-themed films.
The sword fighting in this scene as the drum sounds creates a fast-paced and thrilling atmosphere with some cool, original ideas.
4. Don’t Stop Me Now – “Shaun of the Dead” (2004)
An iconic scene from arguably the best horror comedy to make it to the big screen.
Shaun and his gang fight zombies in the Winchester pub all whilst Queens’, “Don’t Stop Me Now” blares in the background.
A lot of tension builds as the zombies slowly make their way into the pub. However, the rhythm and choreography matching the fight in the pub is nothing short of a stroke of genius.
From bashing the zombies in time to the beat, to using a fire extinguisher on a zombie as Queen sings “Woah, woah, woah, Explode!”, this film is a must for comedy horror fans. A classic film with fun fight scenes, great characters and some real comedic moments.
3. Zombie Attack in Jerusalem – “World War Z” (2013)
In this intense scene from “World War Z,” chaos erupts as Jerusalem is overrun by a horde of zombies.
The breathtaking intensity and relentless pursuit of the undead showcase the sheer terror and mayhem that a zombie apocalypse can unleash.
The zombies here in World War Z are no joke and are arguably the worst kind of zombies we could ever imagine having to face (if there were ACTUALLY a zombie apocalypse).
They are fast, strong and smart. Making them almost impossible to kill, especially given the quantity you see in this scene. A great job is done by showing the sheer number of zombies to be dealt with. Again it makes it easy to envisage how devastating a world with zombies in it could be.
I also think this is one of the most epic and memorable zombie scenes in zombie film history. The sheer scale of undead climbing on top of each other to reach the top of the wall is iconic madness.
2. Train Fight Scene – “Train to Busan” (2016)
“Train to Busan” elevates the zombie genre with a heart-pounding fight scene on a train. The confined space, frenetic action, and desperate struggle for survival make this sequence a standout among zombie movie fight scenes.
I loved the characters in this film and the development of the story as they try to survive a zombie apocalypse while on a train.
Here we see a lot of hand-to-hand and weapon combat. A baton, a shield, hand wraps to prevent bites and a good old-fashioned baseball bat are all used as survivors fight through a carriage of zombies only to find more in the next one.
The writing of the weapons into the choreography and the way they were used was very impressive.
If you haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it. It’s a Korean masterpiece in zombie horror and storytelling.
1. Final Battle with Zombies – “Dawn of the Dead” (2004)
Serving as a milestone in the zombie genre, “Dawn of the Dead” (2004) features an intense mall escape scene.
The survivors fight their way through hordes of zombies, showing the tension, adrenaline, and sheer brutality that set the tone for the entire film.
This sequence established the film as a force to be reckoned with in the zombie movie genre and is easily recognised as one of the more popular zombie movies.
Lots of popular movies and even games have been inspired by this scene and it’s intense from start to finish. A last stand in a truck filled with propane ended this classic film with a bang and landed itself in at number 1 of our top 5 list!
