For fans of Asian action, Sammo Hung is a legend that needs no introduction. After his memorable intro opposite Bruce Lee in the opening fight of 1973’s “Enter the Dragon“, Sammo rose to become one of Hong Kong’s most respected and revered action stars, with a resume boasting a shmorgasbord of classic martial arts hits, from “Magnificent Butcher” to “Ip Man 2“. Now, it seems he’s ready to return to his 80’s roots with the forthcoming installment of the “Lucky Stars” franchise, the newly announced “Return of the Lucky Stars”!
The “Lucky Stars” series first got off the ground with 1983’s “Winners and Sinners”, later followed by 1985’s “My Lucky Stars” and “Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars” the same year, with several other sequels later coming down the pike. Filmmaker and stunt man Dennis Ruel would later pay tribute to the series, and 80’s Hong Kong martial arts films as a whole, with the 2015 action-packed comedy “Unlucky Stars“.
The series is famous among martial arts fans for uniting Sammo, who also sat in the director’s chair for the series’ first three films, with his fellow action legends and brothers from the Peking Opera Academy, Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao. Needless to say, the announcement of the newest “Lucky Stars”, to be released via Sammo’s new production company, Sammo Hung Films, will bring with it no shortage of hope and fervent speculation that a reunion of the three may be right around the corner.
