Despite making its big-screen debut back in August 2009 with “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, the “G.I. Joe” franchise has remained seemingly dormant ever since its 2013 sequel “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”. However, that is soon set to change in a way that’ll please martial arts fans especially with the upcoming spin-off focused on everyone’s favorite ninja master, “Snake Eyes”, which is set to begin production in Vancouver this fall for a 2021 release.
One of the most popular and mysterious characters of the “G.I. Joe” franchise, Snake Eyes is the Joe’s mute, sword-wielding Ninjutsu master, with an especially bitter rivalry towards Storm Shadow, a fellow ninja assassin in the employ of the nefarious Cobra terrorist group. For the two big-screen “G.I. Joe” films, the role of Snake Eyes would fall to Wushu expert Ray Park, with Lee Byung-hun tackling the part of Storm Shadow.
While not much is known at present regarding what the spin-off has in store for fans of the franchise, it is said to be an origin story of sorts, which would effectively rule out Ray Park from returning to his most iconic non-“Star Wars” role.

While that is an unfortunate trade-off, fans of the character are nonetheless sure to delight at seeing him get to fly solo for the first time, and martial arts fans will definitely want to pay attention to the development of what is sure to be a seriously action-packed, Ninja-themed prequel.
“Snake Eyes” is set to get rolling this fall, hissing at theaters on June 4th, 2021. Stay tuned for more news on the film as it slithers down!
