Fans of the acclaimed web-series “Mortal Kombat Legacy” have spent the better part of last year in mourning following the departure of series’ director Kevin Tancheron. This left the future of the series in limbo, an especially unfortunate position for fans to find themselves in given the cliffhanger ending of the series’ second season. However, things began looking up when Tancheron announced that he still intended to return for the series’ third season, and that glimmer of hope has become a burst of sunshine following the news that Warner Bros’. has officially greenlit the third season.
Like the highly popular web-series “Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist“, the newest iteration of “Mortal Kombat” began life as a fan film released on YouTube in the Summer of 2010. The reception to both short films was phenomenal among fans of the long-running video game franchises that inspired both, and within a year, the original short film ” Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” had become the web-series “Mortal Kombat: Legacy”. It debuted it’s first season on Machinima’s YouTube Channel in 2011, and the second, which was just recently released on Blu-ray, in the fall of 2013.
The series was a veritable smorgasbord for martial arts fans and lovers of the “Mortal Kombat” video games. With acclaimed fight choreographer Larnell Stovall serving as the action director, both seasons pulled in names like Michael Jai White, Matt Mullins, Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa, Darren Shahlavi, Eric Jacobus, and Mark Dacascos to portray the beloved character roster of one of the most beloved and enduring video games ever created.
At present, there is little other solid information on the third season, but the very fact that we now know it’s happening is more than enough cause to delight most fans of the series. However, one particularly curious tidbit may offer some insight as to what the third season may have up its sleeve – it’s release is apparently being coordinated to coincide with the next installment of the games series, “Mortal Kombat X”, which is set to launch in April 2015. Here’s to countless hours of pondering and speculation as to just what that means until we see out the first trailer for season three!
