It’s still hard to fathom that it’s been twenty-six years since the original “Mortal Kombat” unleashed onto video arcades around the world – launching one of the greatest video game franchises of all time, and sparking congressional hearings for its unapologetic violence in the process. Naturally, the gaming world just wouldn’t be complete without a new “Mortal Kombat” title every few years, and 2019 is set to mark the debut of the latest chapter in the series, “Mortal Kombat 11”. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait long for, as Shang Tsung would say; and now a taste of things to come, care of the game’s new trailer released at the 2018 Game Awards which you can see below!
The new title follows in the footsteps of 2015’s “Mortal Kombat X” (or, “Mortal Kombat XL”, as it’s called with all its DLC included). Recent installments of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise have taken the series in some very unexpected directions, beginning with 2011’s “Mortal Kombat” (colloquially referred to as “MK 9” by fans). That chapter in the series effectively served as an in-continuity reboot for the series, taking players back to the first Mortal Kombat tournament to re-write history with their favourite Earthrealm warriors. Ultimately, the game’s story ended on something of a cliffhanger, with Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade being the only fighters for Earthrealm left alive.
Of course, deaths are hardly uncommon in the “Mortal Kombat” universe, as the series’ gruesome notoriety alone is testimony to. However, while the game’s full character roster returned for “Mortal Kombat X”, along with some new characters, their return definitely came with some twists, including the story jumping ahead in time by over twenty-five years. Upon its release in 2015, “Mortal Kombat X” sold over five million copies, becoming the year’s 9th bestselling video game title, while fans and reviewers alike declared it among the best titles in MK history.
The series’ ongoing winning streak looks only set to continue with “Mortal Kombat 11”. Judging from the trailer, the newest chapter not only feels masterfully refined, but is seemingly going out of its way to be shockingly brutal even by “Mortal Kombat” standards. Where “Mortal Kombat 11” will ultimately take the series’ mythos is still a mystery, but assuredly it will be one that fans are only too keen to solve!
“Mortal Kombat 11” is set to release on April 23rd, 2019 on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and Xbox One; what are your thoughts on the new trailer?
