“Kung Fu Ghost” Ready to Stream August 2 - Kung Fu Kingdom
Set to be distributed by Vision Films, the official synopsis reveals what viewers can expect from it:
“An adorable and ditsy young woman inherits her late grandfather’s haunted estate but soon discovers that the ghostly inhabitants are there to protect the family’s secret artifacts against treasure-hunting criminals.
Once she learns of an unmatched power and confidence she has always possessed, the treasure-hunting criminals stand no chance against her and the Kung Fu Ghost!”
The press release on the film at prnewswire.com also provides a statement on the film from Ms. Linch herself:
“Filmmaker Jennifer Linch shares, ‘My happiest childhood memories were movie nights with my parents and brothers watching martial arts comedies by Jackie Chan or Stephen Chow. I knew then that I wanted to make martial arts comedies when I grew up so other little girls could have happy memories like mine.’
Ms. Linch’s enthusiasm for both comedy and action and her genuine talent as a martial artist are all over the charmingly tongue-in-cheek trailer for “Kung Fu Ghost”.
While evidently working with a low budget, Ms. Linch and her cast and crew have seemingly used that minimalism very much to their advantage, especially within the context of a haunted-house kung fu comedy, the existence of that sub-genre a niche that “Kung Fu Ghost” seems to occupy with few comparable entities, save for perhaps the wacky, ghoulish, Sammo Hung jiangshi (hopping zombie) classics, such as Encounter of the Spooky Kind and Mr Vampire!
Ms. Linch’s statement on being inspired by Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow is undoubtedly a sentiment shared by millions of martial arts fans around the world, and it’s an influence that she and her collaborators have made into the DNA of “Kung Fu Ghost”.
One certainly hopes her endeavor to inspire future generations of female martial artists resonates when “Kung Fu Ghost” arrives in 3 weeks. It’s certainly hard not to get pulled in by the film’s blend of wackiness and sincerity with meticulously crafted martial arts action, which should portend great things for this kung fu caper…let’s see!
