Trailer for Vietnamese actioner — “Furie”

As anyone who’s seen 2007’s ” The Rebel” can attest, Vietnamese pop star Veronica Ngo ( Ngô Thanh Vân) handily stole the show, no small feat for someone who was a martial arts novice at the time (and who spent the last two weeks’ of filming nursing a broken ankle!). In the years following, Ngo has continued to kick butt on-screen with subsequent appearances in “Clash” , “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny”, and last year’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi“,  – she’s poised to do so once more in 2019’s “Furie”, which you can see the teaser trailer for below!

The official synopsis gives fans a glimpse at what “Furie” has in store:

“In the vein of the international box-office hit action film ‘The Raid‘, ‘Furie’ follows Hai Phuong (Ngo) a gangster who retired from the life of crime after the birth of her daughter. Despite lying low in the countryside, she can’t seem to escape her violent past when her daughter is kidnapped right before her eyes. Hai Phuong is forced back into the life she swore she would leave behind and will stop at nothing to get her daughter back from the infamous organ-trafficking ring.”

Using “The Raid” as a point of comparison is certainly a lofty ideal for any martial arts-heavy action flick to aspire to, and indeed, one that the producers of the film seem fairly confident about. Gary Hamilton of the film’s distributor, Arclight Films, shared this perspective in an official statement: “The appetite for female-led action films and for thriller genre fare is very strong in the international marketplace. Veronica Ngo, the star of Furie, is one of Vietnam’s biggest stars right now making massive international waves. This film is the next Raid and is a real hidden gem…”

There’s certainly no disputing Hamilton’s statement on the rise of female-led action films in recent years, and one need only see “The Rebel” or “Clash” to offer an enthusiastic endorsement of Ngo’s ability to carry an action film. Aside from headlining, Ngo also serves as producer, with Samuel Kefi Abrikh serving as fight choreographer, under the direction of Le-Van Kiet.

You can also check out some Veronica Ngo’s previous work in “The Rebel” and “Clash” below, though we thought her comparatively minor role in “The Last Jedi” should’ve seen her showcase some lightsaber skills (something the stars of “The Raid” know a bit about themselves)!
