ONE Fight Night 16: Top 3 Finishes

Held live at the prestigious Lumpinee Stadium recently, One Championship continues to deliver spectacular events with One Fight Night 16.

Headlining the event was your champion vs. champion matchup between Bantamweight Muay Thai Champion, Jonathan Haggerty, and Bantamweight MMA Champion Fabricio Andrade for the Bantamweight Kickboxing Title.

In our co-main event, we have Tye Ruotolo against Magomed Abdulkadirov for the inaugural Welterweight Submission Grappling Title. Other fighters on the card include the electrifying Lito Adiwang, young prodigy Zhang Peimian, former Lightweight Muay Thai title challenger Sinsamut Klinmee, and many more.

So without further ado, let’s count down the Top 3 Finishes from One Fight Night 16!

3. Ayaka Miura vs. Meng Bo

To kick off the list, we have the matchup between Ayaka Miura vs. Meng Bo. With a record of 11-5, Miura was a long time One veteran who challenged Strawweight Champion Xiong Jingnan for the title.

Despite being 6 years the junior, Meng Bo came in to this fight with a record of 21-6, this being way more experienced. In addition, Meng holds the distinction of handing current UFC Strawweight Champion Zhang Weili her first loss.

Round 1 began with Miura shooting for a takedown at 0:07, but Meng defended well and took the back.

The two immediately got back up, but Meng quickly brought the fight back to the ground with a punch at 0:09 and rained ground and pound.

Despite being on the bottom in side control, Miura was wrapping Meng’s neck with a guillotine and eventually reversed position at 1:16.

Staying on top for a while, Miura submitted Meng Bo with a Scarf-Hold Americana at 2:09 of round 1.

2. Cristina Morales vs. Supergirl

With a record of 49-8, Spain’s Cristina Morales holds the distinction of being the reigning ISKA Atomweight World Champion and a former Enfusion 52kg World Champion.

Despite being 0-1 in One Championship, she still managed to pull the upset against young prospect and Thailand’s own Supergirl, who was 40-5-1 at the time.

Once the bell rang, Morales was swarming Supergirl with heavy, high-volume combinations.

With 38 seconds left in round 1, Morales appeared to hurt Supergirl with a punch-kick combination.

This forced Supergirl to retreat and allowed Morales to continue pushing the pace. Supergirl barely had any answer to the onslaught, and with only 15 seconds left in round 1, referee Olivier Coste paused the fight, but eventually stopped it.

The result was Morales winning by TKO in 2:45 of round 1, and earning her first Performance of the Night bonus!

1. Jonathan Haggerty vs. Fabricio Andrade

Now for our number one spot, we have a Champion-vs-Champion affair, that’s right! One Bantamweight Muay Thai Champion Jonathan Haggerty vs. One Bantamweight MMA Champion Fabricio Andrade for the vacant One Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title!

With a Muay Thai/kickboxing record of 40-3 and MMA record of 9-2 with 1 No Contest, Andrade steamrolled his way through One’s MMA bantamweight division and made a statement against UFC veteran and hard-hitter John Lineker, winning the One MMA Bantamweight title in the process.

Holding a record of 20-4, Haggerty holds notable victories over legends Sam-A and Nong-O, both of whom he fought for One Muay Thai world titles.

In round 1 Haggerty kept the distance with his jabs, teeps and footwork, and he eventually upped the volume of his strikes and landed one combination after another.

Andrade, on the other hand, had little answer, as he tried pressing forward, landing a few low kicks here and there.

In round 2, Haggerty continued keeping his distance, landing with volume, and mixing up punches, kicks, and knees.

At 1:12, Haggerty did a skip-step into a left high kick that hurt Andrade. Haggerty pressed forward and took full advantage of Andrade’s hurt state by landing one punching combination after another.

Andrade tried answering back with his own strikes, but to no avail, as Haggerty eventually knocked him down at 1:50.

With Andrade struggling to get back up, referee Olivier Coste stopped the fight at 1:57 of round 2.

Result: Haggerty became One’s new Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion and one of One’s few two-sport champions. On top of that, he earned another Performance of the Night bonus!
