Kill Bill Vol. 3: on the cards says Quentin Tarantino!

The two-part blood-spurting katana chop-a-thon that was “Kill Bill” Vol. 1 and 2 comprise two of the most memorable martial-arts films of the early 2000’s. The films followed the vendetta of an assassin known only as “The Bride” (with her full name later revealed as Beatrix Kiddo) as she seeks revenge of her former assassin allies that left her for dead on her wedding day.

This would eventually culminate in her eminently satisfying final confrontation with her old boss Bill, played by the late David Carradine. Though it’s been fifteen years since we last left The Bride, it seems that writer/director Quentin Tarantino may be gearing up to revisit her story in the future.

Dinner with Uma Thurman

Tarantino’s comments on the prospective “Kill Bill Vol. 3” came during an interview on Andy Cohen Live. After being asked about a possible third movie, Tarantino mentioned having recently had dinner with Uma Thurman, who portrays The Bride in both films, which spurred his thinking on the matter.

Idea for Kill Bill Vol. 3

Making it clear that he didn’t want to simply rehash the first two films, Tarantino went on to say “But now I actually have an idea that could be interesting.” Though Tarantino stated that it would be “at least three years from now” before it would theoretically get off the ground, the director stated that “It is definitely in the cards.”

Tarantino’s 10-Film Filmography

Something that makes Tarantino’s comments especially interesting is the director’s well-known and self-imposed shelf life on his own career. Specifically, Tarantino has stated his intention to retire from filmmaking after directing ten movies. In an interview with Deadline during the press tour for “The Hateful Eight”, Tarantino would state:

“I like that I will leave a 10-film filmography, and so I’ve got two more to go after this. It’s not etched in stone, but that is the plan. If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don’t screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career. If, later on, I come across a good movie, I won’t not do it just because I said I wouldn’t. But 10 and done, leaving them wanting more — that sounds right.”

Where “Kill Bill Vol. 3” factors into this remains an open question, but Tarantino’s comments on it being on the table should be welcome news to fans of the first two. Both volumes of “Kill Bill” were major hits that paid tribute to kung fu films, samurai movies, and spaghetti westerns, and gained fame for quite literally showering its characters in blood in the famed nightclub battle of the first film.

A Possible Angle for Kill Bill 3

Tarantino has previously spoken of the possibility of a third “Kill Bill” focusing on Nikki Green growing up to avenge her mother Vernita, who was among The Bride’s victims during her revenge spree. “Kill Bill Vol. 1” even famously saw The Bride leave the door open to Nikki to settle the score with her down the road, so it will be interesting to see if that is still what the story will entail.

Either way, “Kill Bill Vol. 3” being “in the cards” is definitely something for martial arts aficionados to keep an eye out for!
