Jackie Chan and John Cena board “Project X”!

After returning to the big-screen in the English-speaking world with last autumn’s “The Foreigner”, after something of a hiatus from that arena for the last few years, Jackie Chan is ready to roll once again in the upcoming action-thriller, “Project X”, and he’s bringing some heavy-hitting company with him in the form of WWE’s John Cena!

A synopsis released by the Hollywood Reporter reveals what audiences can expect from “Project X”:

“The movie centers on a Chinese private security contractor (Chan) who is called in to extract the oil workers when a China-run oil refinery in the Middle East is attacked. When he learns that the attackers’ real plan is to steal a fortune in oil, he teams up with an American — a former Marine, played by Cena — to stop them.”

Cena joins “Project X” (not to be confused with the 2012 found-footage comedy of the same name!) in the role originally intended for Jackie’s good friend Sylvester Stallone, who was forced to pull out due to commitments on the upcoming “Creed II” and “The Expendables 4”.  This would’ve marked Sly and Jackie’s first major collaboration (which famously almost took place with 1993’s “Demolition Man”) – hopefully, audiences will get to see a Sly-Jackie team-up eventually come to pass!

John Cena is no stranger to action films himself, having headlined his first big actioner in 2006’s gloriously over-the-top “The Marine”, a film that likely set a world record for “Explosions per minute” at “approximately infinity”, with subsequent appearances in other such action movies as “12 Rounds” and “The Reunion”. Cena also recently stepped into comedic territory with April’s comedy hit “Blockers”, and will also be seen later this year in the “Transformers” prequel “Bumblebee”. “Project X” will mark Jackie’s first major collaboration with a professional wrestler, and as his legions of fans around the world will surely agree, he’s got the art of team-ups down to a science!

“Project X” is set to roll out on cinema screens some time next year. Stay tuned for more info on the film as it dives head first into production. In the meantime, what do you think of the Chan-Cena (or JC-JC) tag-team, what other pro-wrestlers would you love to see Jackie join forces with?
