Retirement is a word that can be found in the average person’s vocabulary, but not in Jackie Chan’s. He’s currently hard at work on “Skip Trace” under the direction of “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” auteur Renny Harlin, and will also be lending his vocal talents to the upcoming “Kung Fu Panda 3”. Now, news has gotten out that he is set to re-unite with Owen Wilson in the third installment of the popular “Shanghai” franchise, entitled “Shanghai Dawn”!
The comedic duo will reprise their roles of the stalwart Chon Wang aka “John Wayne” and the wisecracking schemer Roy O’Bannon in the sequel. Talk of the sequel began as far back as the release of its predecessor, “Shanghai Knights” in 2003, with Wilson laying out different setting that the third entry might explore. “There’s talk about going to Egypt. This does seem like a Hope/Crosby thing. You can put the characters in all different situations and it works”, Wilson said in a 2003 interview with Empire Magazine in London while promoting the second film. After that, the sequel largely seemed to vanish into thin air until it’s announcement earlier last week.
Wilson will also soon be seen in another franchise revival, the upcoming “Zoolander 2”, set to be released on February 12th, 2016, while another of Jackie’s buddy action-comedy series is making a comeback too, albeit without Jackie himself, in the form of the upcoming “Rush Hour” television series, in which Jon Foo will assume the role Detective Inspector Lee and Justin Hires stepping into the role of James Carter.
Stay tuned for more information on “Shanghai Dawn” as it arrives. In the meantime, check out our reviews of “Shanghai Noon” and “Shanghai Knights“, and read all about Mr. Glen Stanway’s experience of attending Jackie’s 60th birthday party last April, as well!
