Preparing Your Dojo for the Winter Season

The air’s getting chillier, which means winter is almost here. Have you prepared your dojo for the cold season yet? Winter can cause problems with your building, like faulty heating or frozen pipes, which can affect the safety and comfort of your students as they train. You’ll need to check for these problems and address them if they appear. You may also want to shift your training schedule for the winter season and introduce new programs.

If you have yet to do a winter inspection or plan your winter schedule, don’t worry. This list runs you through what you need to do to get your dojo ready for the wind, rain, and snow that lies ahead.

Inspect Your HVAC System

Your dojo’s heating system will work hard this winter. Is it up to the task? Consider calling in a professional to inspect your furnace, including its filters and vents. If they notice any issues, such as strange noises or inefficient heating, they’ll be able to address them so your system can run at full power. A furnace that runs well will keep your members warm and comfortable, and your utility bills in check.

Check Your Plumbing

Cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst, which leads to expensive water damage. There are ways to prevent pipes from freezing, like insulating exposed pipes or letting faucets drip during extreme cold snaps. A professional can help you identify vulnerable areas and apply solutions to protect your plumbing all winter long.

Update Your Class Schedule

Shorter days and darker evenings might mean you need to adjust your class times. You could offer earlier classes to accommodate those who prefer not to travel in the dark. This is also a good time to introduce winter-themed workshops or specialized training sessions to keep your members engaged and motivated during the colder months.

Plan a Deep Clean

A deep clean before the busy holiday season can set a positive tone for your dojo. You can scrub the mats, clean the windows, and organize your equipment. A clean and tidy space shows your members you care about their training environment. It also creates a more welcoming atmosphere for everyone who walks through your doors.

Stock Up on Supplies

Winter weather can sometimes be unpredictable, so it’s wise to have extra supplies on hand. You should stock up on items like salt for icy walkways and extra cleaning products for wet, slushy floors. Having these items ready will help you maintain a safe environment for your students and staff, no matter what the weather brings.

Get Your Dojo Winter-Ready

Prepare your dojo for the winter season if you haven’t already! The sooner you inspect locations like the plumbing system for potential issues, and the sooner you plan out your new class schedule, the smoother the season will go for your business.
